Topic 2: Using technologies to support online learners to plan their own learning

Technologies can be used to support self-regulated learning processes in a variety of ways. For example, they can provide learners with access to personalized learning resources and activities, support learners in planning and organizing their learning, facilitate self-reflection and metacognition, and provide opportunities for collaboration and social interaction.

Setting learning goals
Digital tools can help students to set SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) learning goals. For example, students can use online learning management systems (LMSs) to create goal-setting worksheets or to track their progress towards their goals.

Planning and organizing learning
Planning and organizing learning: Digital tools can help students to plan and organize their learning by providing them with tools to create to-do lists, calendars, and study schedules. For example, students can use Google Calendar to create a calendar of their upcoming assignments and deadlines, or they can use a time tracking tool to track how much time they are spending on different learning activities.

Monitoring progress
Digital tools can help students to monitor their progress by providing them with feedback on their work and by tracking their performance on assignments and assessments. For example, students can use an online quizzing platform to track their progress on a particular topic, or they can use an LMS to view their grades on assignments.

Reflecting on learning
Digital tools can help students to reflect on their learning by providing them with tools to create journals, portfolios, and blog posts. For example, students can use a journal to reflect on their successes and challenges, or they can use a portfolio to collect their work and to demonstrate their learning.
