Topic 3: Tips for Successful Assessment!

Adoption of different modes of feedback throughout a course life-cycle (Ryan et al., 2019):

  • Each mode has certain advantages and disadvantages
  • Different educational needs of learners may be covered by different methods
  • Students gain additional value from receiving comments from multiple modes.

Maintenance of staff’s crucial role in purposeful assessment design (Tracii, 2020):

  • Offering opportunities to learners to engage in sustainable dialogues for assessment (e.g. discussion boards, peer assessment)
  • Fostering a sense of social presence and social connectedness through the use of digital tools and assessment designs that support such features (e.g. audio-visual feedback, peer feedback)
  • Designing processes for feedback with cost-effective, accessible and user-friendly digital tools.

Adoption of learner-centred re-conceptualization of assessment (Ryan et al., 2019):

  • The learner is brought at the centre of the assessment process, making them the driving force of the whole process influencing it by their individual context and needs. (Henderson et al., 2019).
  • Adopting feedback comments that are detailed, personalized and usable
  • Learners can comprehend and make sense of the received information
  • Learners stay motivated and have the chance to act upon the received information to enhance their learning experience
